Walk in Cooler for Less than $1,000

The following are some simple steps that anyone can take, with minimal technical knowledge and tools, to have your very own walk-in cooler for hanging and aging your wild game meat like a professional meat processor!

  • Google search for local commercial demolition subcontractors.

  • Call them and tell them you're looking for walk-in cooler panels (you don't need the refrigeration unit, keep reading to see why), and ask if they might have a project coming up soon where they are tasked with demolishing one out of a commercial kitchen. Keep in mind they have a job to do and their #1 priority is to make money on the project, so you should make this as easy as possible for them so that goal isn't jeopardized. Depending on how the conversation is going, there are a few options here:

  1. Offer a little cash on the side (if you can afford it, totally up to you) for their trouble.

  2. Offer to have a trailer sitting and waiting at the job-site so they can load the panels directly onto the trailer (this way hopefully it is easier for them, and also you will minimize the amount of times you have to move the panels by yourself).

  3. Just be ultra appreciative and chances are they won't mind helping you. If not, just keep going down the google list until you find someone that is willing. Even if you have to venture into neighboring towns/cities it would be worth it! Eventually you're likely to find a fellow hunter who understands what you're trying to accomplish.

  4. Once the panels are loaded onto the trailer, be PUNCTUAL and get it out of their way. Again, try to inconvenience their operation as little as possible.

  • Now that you've got the panels you're almost done! Select your location based on the following required infrastructure:

  • 120V receptacle (standard outlet) is readily available or can easily be added (IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO ACCOMPLISH THIS PLEASE HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. Remember, electricity is one of the only trades that can burn everything to the ground!) ~$200

  • Surface should be relatively flat and level. This can be accomplished with some form boards and Quick-Crete. ~$100

  • A roof is highly desirable as the cooler panels are not 100% waterproof and keeping the sun off will make the unit much more efficient.

  • Once the infrastructure is in place, you're ready to assemble your panels. They typically have a "cam-lock" or similar system that ties each panel together, operated by a large Allen-Wrench. For more info on assembly specifically, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrSbVC69LGU#action=share

  • Next you'll need a standard 5000 BTU (or greater) window AC unit (Yes, you read that right) from Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, or wherever you shop for hardware and home supplies. (Pro-tip: You're going to be working the unit pretty hard, so buy the extended warranty if available.) ~$200 - $500

  • And now... the secret ingredient... the technology that makes this all possible... The Cool Bot. https://www.amazon.com/COOLBOT-Gen6-2015-2019-Blue/dp/B07T32HF9H/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=cool+bot&qid=1585657216&sr=8-5 $389

  • Follow the provided instructions to connect your Cool Bot to your AC unit and set the desired temperature.

That's it! You've got your very own walk-in cooler and literally saved thousands compared to a full price installation.
