Dear Mr./Mrs. Land Owner,
Hello, my name is [name]. I live and work in [place]. I was born and raised here, received my ___________ degree/certificate from [school] in [major/vocation/trade/etc.], and am a [job title] of [company].
I am contacting you concerning the property you own in [location]. We are practically neighbors! [insert personal connection to the land.]
[INSERT AERIAL PHOTO FROM GOOGLE EARTH, ONXMAPS, HUNTSTAND, ETC.]
Your [acreage] parcel appears to be a mix of pines, hardwoods, and underbrush that is prime habitat for wild turkey and deer [insert other game here if applicable]. I would like to inquire about the possibility to scout and legally hunt this parcel.
In return for the opportunity to access this parcel to both scout and legally hunt, I am offering several ways I can be useful to you and help preserve the property.
First, since this parcel is large and could have unauthorized entry on the property and unwanted illegal dumping, if you’d like, I would mark the property with “No Trespassing” signs along [SW 30th Ave]. If allowed, I would also set up game cameras for scouting, which would double as a form of security camera. If any unauthorized visitors are caught on camera I would contact you immediately and help you deal with the authorities on such matters if you’re unavailable.
Second, during scouting trips, I would gather garbage that I can hand-carry in bags and report any unauthorized activity on the property. The goal would be to leave the property cleaner than it was found and help prevent any future costly cleanup when development, agricultural use, or future sales occur. I also have a tractor with implements that I could use to help improve the property and/or protect it with fire lanes around the perimeter.
As for me, I am a licensed hunter with hunter safety certification issued by the FL Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC) [insert local governing authority] and hold personal values on treating wildlife and their habitats with respect. I also have immense respect for the harvest, and I use as much of the animal as possible.
I am primarily a bow hunter. If you would allow me to rifle hunt as well, I may do so on occasion. This property is not within city limits and therefore discharging a firearm is legal, but due to nearby residential properties, rifle hunting would only occur on sections of the property that would be far away from homes where responsible shots would be made if a clear AND safe shot is presented. If you would prefer archery only, I would certainly be happy to oblige. [customize this paragraph to reflect your personal preferences].
I recognize that there may be a question of liability for harm or injury to anyone on the property participating in either scouting or hunting. As a hunter, I recognize that harm or injuries may occur on any property that may hold natural or unnatural obstacles or dangers. I would do my best to minimize or eliminate hazards. I use tethered safety harnesses when in tree stands. If you’d rather not have tree stands on the property, I could confine hunting locations to ground-blinds only. Either way, I’d be happy to provide and/or sign a waiver of liability, hold harmless agreement, or any other legal document that you are comfortable with.
The only other people I would potentially bring onto your beautiful property is my family. I have an 8 year old son named Sawyer, 4 year old daughter named Saylor, and my wife’s name is Morgan. [Insert family photo(s) here. If the intent is to lease with buddies, introduce them and include their family photos here as well].
If granted permission, I would provide and sign a waiver, removing owner’s liability of injuries or harm to myself while on the property. I would also provide a permission slip recognized by the [FWC] to be carried on the property if questioned by any authorities about accessing and hunting the property.
To sum up my request, I am offering to mark the property as private to protect from unwanted trespassing and/or dumping, become eyes for reporting issues that may be of concern to you, the land owner, and clean up the property as manageable debris is found in exchange for access to the property for scouting and legal hunting.
I appreciate the time you have already given in reading this request and look forward to your response. I am available to communicate in whichever method is most convenient and comfortable for you. My mailing address is [address]. Feel free to call, text, or email if you prefer.
Sincerely,
